It is colourless to slightly yellow watery liquid which has the smell of household bleach. It dissolves in water. This compound was produced by Claude Louis Berthollet of France, in the year 1789. The compound was obtained by passing chlorine gas through potash lye solution. Industrially it can be synthesized by the Hooker process. In this process dilute sodium hydroxide is made to react with chlorine gas, to generate NaClO plus sodium chloride plus water.
